How to Make Fabric Flowers From T Shirts (Recycling)

Spread the love

I love it that my tutorials can save the earth by encouraging recycling.  In this fabric flower tutorial, I’m going to teach you how to recycle an old t-shirt into a cute fabric flower that you can embellish on headbands and tank tops.

Materials
1. Scissors
2. Beads
3. Threaded Needle
4. Round Templates in 5 different sizes (from 1.25 inches to 3 inches)
5. An Old T-Shirt

STEP 1

Lay the round templates on the shirt. Have some spaces in between so you’ll have an easier time when you cut them.

STEP 2

Pin the templates on the shirt to secure.

STEP 3

Cut the part of the shirt with the templates.

STEP 4

Cut the shirt fabric along the outline of your round template.

STEP 5

Remove the each pin to separate the template from the t shirt fabric.

STEP 6

Separate the round shirt petals of the same size to create 2 sets of shirt flowers.

STEP 7

And now, the fun part!  Hold each fabric petal where the ribs of the shirt fabric are aligned vertically. This step is important so you can stretch the fabric properly.

Stretch the fabric starting from the middle. You’ll notice that the original round shape of the fabric will be slightly elongated.

Stretch the top part of the round fabric.

Stretch the lower part of the round fabric.

The stretched fabric will naturally curl/roll.

STEP 8

Uncurl the round fabric.

STEP 9

Stack the fabric on top of each other starting from the largest to the smallest.

BEFORE and AFTER:  Layers unstretched shirt petals and layers of the stretched shirt petals.

STEP 10

Sew a single cross stitch to secure the stack of shirt petals.  This step is important so that the layers of petals will be secure before you add the beads.

STEP 11

Start sewing the beads on the fabric flower.

STEP 12

Knot the thread when you’re done.

Now you have your cute fabric flower from an old t-shirt!

I made 2 t shirt flowers to sew on my plain tank top.
